A qualified surveyor checks the staircase layout, available headroom, landing access, power supply and the user’s transfer requirements. The proposed rail design and installation work should be explained before you proceed, including any points where the rail may affect doors, walkways or existing fixtures. Installation should then be completed by trained fitters who test the lift and demonstrate its operation before leaving.

The guarantee should set out which parts and labour are covered, how long cover lasts and any conditions that apply. Ask for these details in writing before ordering, particularly where a bespoke rail has been made for split-level stairs.

Make sure the user is comfortable with the controls and knows who to contact if their mobility or circumstances change.

Regular servicing helps identify wear, charging problems or changes in the staircase environment before they affect reliable use. Confirm what aftercare is available and whether it is arranged through the installer or a separate service team.

Ask how servicing is booked, what checks are carried out and how urgent problems are prioritised. Report unusual noises, repeated stopping, reduced battery performance or changes in the seat’s movement rather than continuing to use the lift without advice. A review may also be appropriate if the user’s transfer ability changes or the home is altered around the stairlift.
