Keep the chair clean and unobstructed, carry out simple visual and functional checks, and arrange professional servicing whenever there is damage, unusual movement or a change in performance. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions, as cleaning products, lubrication points and battery arrangements differ between models.

Before carrying out any checks, make sure the chair is stationary and unplug it from the mains. Do not remove covers, work on the motor or alter the wiring yourself. Internal components can move unexpectedly, and incorrect electrical or mechanical work may create a safety risk or invalidate the manufacturer’s warranty.

Check the power supply and handset regularly.

• Confirm that the mains plug is fully inserted and that the cable is not trapped beneath the chair or stretched across a walkway.
• Inspect the cable, plug and visible connections for cuts, crushing, fraying, heat damage or looseness.
• Make sure the handset operates the lift and recline functions smoothly and that its cable is not pulled tight or caught in the mechanism.
• Keep the handset where it cannot be sat on, dropped or exposed to liquids.
• If the chair stops responding, operates intermittently or requires repeated button presses, stop using it and seek advice rather than repeatedly resetting the controls.

Keep the area beneath and around the chair clear. Objects such as footstools, rugs, toys, pet bedding and trailing cables can obstruct the mechanism or become trapped as the chair moves. The chair should stand on a stable, level surface and should not be moved while occupied unless the model is specifically designed for this.

Clean the chair using approved methods. Vacuum dust and crumbs from the seat, back, footrest and accessible gaps, taking care not to pull on wiring. Deal with spills promptly using the upholstery method recommended by the manufacturer. Avoid soaking the chair, spraying cleaner near the handset or motor, and using solvents or abrasive products. Check that the footrest closes properly and that the chair reaches its normal raised and reclined positions without rubbing, jolting or stopping unexpectedly. Do not continue using the chair if the frame appears damaged or if a component is loose.

Do not lubricate the mechanism unless the instructions specifically permit it. Some lift chairs have sealed or protected moving parts, and applying oil or grease in the wrong place can attract dust, damage components or affect the chair’s operation. Never apply lubricant to the motor, electrical connections or upholstery. If the mechanism is stiff, jerky or noisy, arrange an inspection instead of attempting to correct it with a household lubricant.

Check the battery backup where fitted. The backup batteries normally allow the chair to return to a safe position during a power cut, but they still need to be connected correctly and replaced when their performance declines. Look for swelling, leakage, corrosion or damaged connections without touching leaking material. If the chair moves more slowly, the backup function is weak, or the batteries are no longer holding charge, contact a qualified technician for the correct replacement. Use only the battery type specified for the chair.

A simple functional check can be included in your normal routine. With the area clear and the chair unoccupied, operate the lift and recline controls and listen for changes in the motor or mechanism. Watch for uneven movement, excessive vibration, hesitation, unexpected stopping, burning smells or a handset that becomes hot. These signs should not be ignored, even if the chair completes its movement.

Arrange professional servicing if you notice unusual noises, reduced lifting power, repeated electrical faults, damaged wiring, a failing battery, fluid or debris inside the mechanism, or any movement that is no longer smooth and even. Professional maintenance can include inspecting the motor and frame, testing the controls and safety functions, checking connections, assessing the battery system and examining mechanical components that are not accessible during routine cleaning.

Keep a note of any changes you observe and follow the recommended servicing schedule for your model. A chair that is used frequently, occupied by a heavier user than previously, stored in a dusty environment or left unused for a prolonged period may need particular attention. After extended storage, inspect the cable, handset, battery and area beneath the chair before reconnecting the power, and do not use it if there is visible damage or uncertainty about its condition.
