Why does my stairlift make a beeping noise even when not in use?

A stairlift that beeps while idle is usually indicating that it is not charging correctly, is switched off at an isolation point, has been left away from a charging position, or has detected a safety or system fault. The exact meaning of the sound varies between models, so the safest first check is whether the lift is correctly parked on its charging contacts and switched on.

When a stairlift is not being used, it should normally remain at one of its designated charging points. Depending on the installation, this may be at the top or bottom of the stairs. If the lift has stopped short of the charging point, the batteries may gradually lose charge and the stairlift can sound an alert. Return it to the correct position using the controls, provided it operates normally and the track is clear.

Check the following without removing any covers or attempting electrical repairs:

• Make sure the stairlift is fully positioned at its charging point, rather than just near it.
• Check that the mains supply is switched on and that the plug, fused connection unit or isolation switch has not been turned off.
• Confirm that the key switch is inserted and in the operating position, if your model has one.
• Look for anything preventing the seat, armrests, swivel mechanism or footrest from being fully returned to its normal position.
• Check the charging contacts for obvious dirt or damage, but do not use liquids or abrasive materials to clean them.
• Look for an indicator light or display message, and note whether the beeping is continuous, intermittent or accompanied by a fault symbol.

A low battery is another common cause. This can happen if the stairlift has been left away from its charger, the electricity supply has been interrupted, or the batteries are no longer holding charge effectively. Leave the stairlift parked correctly and switched on for the period recommended in its user instructions. Some stairlifts beep when a safety edge, seat sensor, swivel seat or another interlock has not returned to its expected position. The pattern of beeps may be a model-specific diagnostic code. A single occasional sound can have a different meaning from repeated beeps, and the same pattern is not necessarily shared by every stairlift.
