Regular stair lift maintenance involves keeping the lift clean and unobstructed, checking its basic safety features, allowing the batteries to charge correctly and arranging professional servicing in line with the manufacturer’s recommendations. These measures help preserve reliable operation and can identify wear or faults before they affect everyday use.

Routine checks for users

Before using the stair lift, keep the stairs, landing and areas around the charging points clear. Check that the seat is correctly positioned, the armrests and footrest are secure, and the seat belt is not damaged. If your model has a swivel seat, make sure it locks into its travelling position before setting off.

Controls should respond smoothly and consistently. Test the armrest control and, where fitted, the remote controls without forcing them. Do not continue using the lift if a control sticks, responds intermittently or operates the lift in an unexpected direction.

Look over the track and the visible parts of the lift for dirt, spilled fluids or objects that could obstruct movement. Pay particular attention to the lower and upper ends of the rail, where household items can sometimes be left in the lift’s path. Never place furniture, rugs, cables or other objects where they could catch on the footrest or interfere with the lift.

Keeping the stair lift clean

Wipe the seat, armrests, footrest and controls with a soft, slightly damp cloth, then dry them thoroughly. Outdoor stair lifts need additional attention because rain, humidity, dirt and temperature changes can affect exposed surfaces and electrical connections. Keep the lift covered or parked as instructed, remove debris from the track and report signs of corrosion, water ingress or deteriorating covers. Reconditioned stair lifts should be maintained according to the instructions for the specific model installed, rather than relying on its previous service history.

When to stop using the lift
