How long does it take to install a curved stairlift?

A curved stairlift is usually installed in several hours, often during a single visit, although a more complex staircase may take longer. This is separate from the full timescale, which includes the home assessment, detailed measuring, bespoke rail manufacture, delivery and arranging the installation date.

The installation itself begins once the stairlift and its made-to-measure rail have been delivered. The installer checks the staircase and surrounding area, positions and secures the rail, fits the stairlift carriage and seat, and connects the charging points. The system is then tested throughout its full travel path, including bends, landings, parking positions and safety controls.

Before leaving, the installer will normally explain how to operate the stairlift safely. This includes using the controls, swivel seat, safety belt, armrests, footrest and remote controls, as applicable to the model. You should also be shown how to charge the lift and what to do if it stops or displays a warning. Allowing time for this handover is important, particularly where someone else will be helping the user.

The overall timescale depends on the staircase and the type of stairlift required. Unlike a straight stairlift, a curved model usually needs a rail designed specifically for the property. A surveyor will assess the staircase before manufacture and confirm the practical details, including:

• the number and shape of bends;
• intermediate landings or changes in direction;
• the width and gradient of each flight;
• available space at the top and bottom of the stairs;
• where the stairlift can safely park and charge;
• the position of doors, radiators, bannisters and other obstructions; and
• whether any electrical work or preparation is needed.

A straightforward curved staircase with good access may be ready for installation relatively quickly after the survey and approval of the design. A lift for a multi-flight staircase, a staircase with tight corners or unusual geometry, or a system requiring additional features may need more design and manufacturing time. If the stairlift is being reconditioned or supplied for rental, availability of a suitable rail and carriage can also affect the date.

On the day of installation, you can usually expect the following:

1. The installer confirms the agreed route and checks that the working area is safe.
2. The rail is assembled and fixed securely to the stair treads or other approved fixing points, rather than relying on the wall.
3. The carriage, seat, controls, batteries and charging points are fitted.
4. The stairlift is run repeatedly through its route to check smooth travel, clearances and safety functions.
5. The staircase and surrounding area are cleaned, and the operation and maintenance instructions are explained.

Installation may take longer if access to the property is restricted, if furniture needs moving, if the stairlift includes powered options, or if remedial work is required. The installer may also need to pause the work if the staircase or electrical supply differs materially from the survey information. These issues are uncommon when the assessment is thorough, but they are reasons why an exact installation duration cannot be confirmed from the staircase description alone.

To help the visit run smoothly, keep the stairs and landings clear, make sure the installer can reach the electricity supply, and tell us in advance about access restrictions, parking limitations or anyone who may need to use the stairs during the work. If the stairlift is replacing an existing model, confirm whether removal and disposal are included in the arrangements.
