What duration options are available for renting a stairlift, and how can I extend the rental period if needed?
Stairlift rentals can be arranged for short-term or longer periods, with the rental duration agreed around your expected recovery, treatment or accessibility needs. If you need the stairlift for longer, contact Independent Stairlifts before the agreed end date so we can confirm availability, extend the hire agreement and explain any continuing rental or service charges.
Stairlift rental periods are usually arranged to match the time you expect to need the equipment. Depending on availability and your circumstances, this may be a short hire during recovery, a temporary arrangement lasting several weeks or months, or a longer rental where your need for accessible stairs is uncertain. The exact term, minimum hire period, ongoing charges and return arrangements are set out in your rental agreement.
Short-term rental: A short hire can be suitable after an operation, during rehabilitation, while recovering from an injury or while waiting for a permanent accessibility solution. The expected end date is agreed when the stairlift is ordered, but it does not have to be treated as a fixed date if your circumstances change. Tell us as early as possible if your recovery or care arrangements are taking longer than expected.
Longer rental periods: A longer arrangement may be more appropriate if you have a progressive mobility condition, are providing care for someone at home, are waiting for building work or are not yet ready to decide whether to purchase. In these cases, the rental can be reviewed in line with your continuing needs. Longer hire may involve different commercial terms from a short-term rental, so check the agreement rather than assuming that the original rate continues indefinitely.
Flexible or open-ended arrangements: Some customers need a stairlift but cannot predict how long it will be required. Where this type of rental is available, the agreement will explain how the hire continues, how charges are applied and how much notice is needed to end it. Availability can depend on the stairlift model, your staircase and whether a suitable reconditioned unit is available.
To extend your rental, contact Independent Stairlifts before the agreed end date. We can:
- confirm the current rental end date and any notice requirement;
- check that the stairlift and the relevant rental arrangement remain available;
- explain the continuing rental, servicing and any other applicable charges;
- check whether an inspection or service visit is advisable; and
- confirm the extension in writing, including the revised end date or ongoing terms.
It is best not to wait until the final day of the agreement. An extension may require administrative arrangements, a review of the equipment or confirmation that the stairlift is still allocated to you. Continuing to use the stairlift after the agreed period without contacting us could leave the rental outside the terms originally accepted and may affect billing or support arrangements.
Before requesting an extension, consider whether your circumstances have changed. Tell us if the user’s mobility has deteriorated, if weight or transfer requirements have changed, if the staircase is being altered, or if the stairlift is no longer being used. A new assessment may be appropriate if the existing model no longer provides the right fit or level of support. Do not alter, remove or relocate the stairlift yourself.
If you no longer need the stairlift, contact us to arrange the next step rather than simply stopping payment or leaving the equipment unused. We will explain the required notice, removal arrangements and any final charges under your agreement. If you are unsure whether to return the stairlift or continue renting it, we can discuss the practical options based on the expected length of need and the suitability of the equipment.
Rental prices and extension terms can vary according to the stairlift type, installation requirements, rental duration, servicing arrangements and whether the equipment is new or reconditioned. Ask for a clear breakdown of the extension cost, collection or removal terms and any charges that would apply if the rental ends earlier or later than planned. This gives you a reliable basis for deciding whether to extend the hire or consider purchasing a stairlift instead.
For help with an extension, have your rental details available and contact Independent Stairlifts as soon as you know the original period may not be sufficient. We can then confirm the available options for your stairlift and home, and make sure your support continues without an avoidable gap.
To extend a stairlift rental, contact Independent Stairlifts before the agreed end date so we can confirm the revised hire period, ongoing charges and continued servicing arrangements. The extension must be confirmed under the terms of your rental agreement; do not assume that continuing to use the stairlift automatically extends the hire.
We may also check whether the existing stairlift remains suitable, particularly if the user’s mobility, weight or transfer needs have changed. If the rental is no longer required, contact us to arrange collection or removal and confirm any notice requirements or final charges.
