What happens if my needs change and I no longer require the rental stairlift before the end of the rental period?

If you no longer need your rental stairlift before the agreed rental period ends, contact Independent Stairlifts as soon as possible. We can review your rental agreement with you, confirm the notice required, explain whether any early-termination or removal charge applies, and arrange a suitable date for the stairlift to be taken out.

Stopping use of the stairlift does not automatically end the rental agreement. Until the agreement has been formally ended and the equipment has been collected or removed, rental payments and other contractual responsibilities may continue. Do not disconnect, move or dispose of the stairlift yourself, as this could create a safety risk and may affect the condition requirements in your agreement.

What happens next

1. Contact us to discuss the change. Tell us why the stairlift is no longer required and whether the change is permanent or temporary. This may be because the user has recovered, moved home, entered residential care, or their mobility needs have changed.
2. We check the rental terms. The agreement will determine the notice period, the date on which rental payments stop, and whether an early-termination cost applies. These terms can vary according to the rental arrangement and the length of time remaining.
3. We arrange removal. An engineer will agree a convenient appointment to remove the stairlift. The removal process may involve taking off the seat, carriage, charging equipment and stair-mounted rail, then checking the staircase and surrounding area.
4. The agreement is closed. Once removal has been completed and any outstanding matters have been settled, we can confirm that the rental has ended. Keep any written confirmation for your records.

Early-termination charges and notice

Some rental agreements allow early cancellation without a further rental commitment after the required notice, while others may include an early-termination charge or require payment for part of the remaining term. The applicable position depends on the terms you accepted when the stairlift was supplied. We will explain the relevant conditions before removal is arranged, so you can understand the financial implications.

Ask us to confirm in writing the proposed removal date, the final rental payment date, any collection or removal cost, and whether there is any balance to pay or refund due. If payments are made by direct debit, do not cancel the instruction until we have confirmed that the final payment has been processed and the agreement is closed.

If the stairlift is no longer being used temporarily

If the user is away from home, recovering from an operation or temporarily unable to use the stairlift, it may be more appropriate to keep the rental in place rather than end it. The stairlift should remain switched on and maintained in accordance with the instructions unless we advise otherwise. A stairlift that is not being used can still require power, servicing and safe access arrangements.

Tell us if the user’s condition or mobility needs have changed rather than simply leaving the equipment unused. We may be able to advise whether the existing stairlift remains suitable, whether an adjustment is needed, or whether removal is the safest option.

If the user has moved or entered care

Where the stairlift is no longer needed because the user has moved house or entered a care setting, contact us promptly with the relevant details. If another person will remain in the property, they should not use the stairlift unless they have been properly assessed and it is suitable for them. A rental stairlift is supplied for the agreed user and staircase, so changing the user or transferring the equipment to another address requires our approval.

If the property is being sold or rented to someone else, arrange removal before completion or handover where possible. The agreement should not be transferred informally to a buyer, tenant or family member. We may need access to the property to remove the equipment and complete the rental records.

Preparing for removal

Before the engineer visits, make sure the staircase and the area around the stairlift are accessible. Remove personal items that could obstruct the work and tell us about any changes to the property, such as building work, new flooring or restricted access. If the stairlift has developed a fault, report this when booking removal rather than attempting a repair yourself.

After removal, there may be small fixing points or minor marks where the rail or charging equipment was installed. The engineer can explain what removal involves and whether any making-good work falls within the rental agreement. Keep all keys, chargers and accessories with the stairlift unless we have told you that they are not required.
