How long can I rent a mobile stairlift for, and what happens if I need to extend the rental period?

A mobile stairlift can usually be rented for the period agreed when it is supplied, whether that is for a short-term recovery or a longer temporary need. If you need it for longer, contact Independent Stairlifts before the rental ends so we can check availability, update the agreement and explain any additional charges.

A mobile stairlift can usually be rented for the period agreed when it is supplied. This may be a short-term hire for recovery, a temporary change in mobility, or a longer rental where a permanent solution is not yet suitable. If you need to keep the stairlift beyond the agreed end date, contact Independent Stairlifts before the rental ends so we can confirm availability, extend the agreement and explain any additional charges.

Rental periods are agreed around your circumstances. The expected hire period will be discussed when the mobile stairlift is provided. The arrangement should take account of why the stairlift is needed, how long it may be required and whether your circumstances are likely to change. A rental period is not necessarily fixed forever, but it should not be assumed that the stairlift can remain on hire automatically after the agreed date.

If your need continues, let us know as soon as you can. Early notice gives us time to check the equipment’s availability, update the rental records and agree a revised collection or return date. It also allows us to discuss whether the mobile stairlift remains the most appropriate option for your needs. This is particularly useful if an injury has taken longer to heal, a planned move has been delayed or you are still waiting for a permanent accessibility solution.

An extension normally involves confirming:

  • the new date until which you expect to need the stairlift;
  • that the same mobile stairlift remains available for continued hire;
  • any change to the rental charge or other terms;
  • whether the equipment needs a check, service or replacement battery; and
  • how and when the stairlift will eventually be collected or returned.

Any extra cost will depend on the rental agreement, the length of the extension and the equipment supplied. We will explain the applicable charges before the extension is confirmed. If you no longer need the stairlift, tell us promptly so that collection can be arranged in line with your agreement and you do not keep equipment for longer than necessary.

Do not continue using the stairlift after the agreed rental period without first speaking to us. An unconfirmed extension may affect the rental terms and could make it unclear who is responsible for the equipment. If the agreed end date is approaching and you have not yet decided whether you will need the stairlift, contact us anyway. We can discuss the options and help you avoid a gap in access.

During an extended rental, continue to use the mobile stairlift only as instructed. Keep it charged as advised, follow the user guidance and report unusual noises, movement, damage, charging problems or any change in your ability to use it safely. Do not attempt repairs or alter the equipment yourself. If your mobility, balance or confidence has changed, ask for advice before continuing to use it.

When the rental ends, the stairlift should be returned or made available for collection in the condition set out in the agreement, allowing for reasonable use. If your temporary need has become ongoing, we can also discuss whether another type of stairlift or a different accessibility aid would provide a more suitable long-term solution.

A mobile stairlift rental can usually be extended when your temporary need lasts longer than expected, but the extension must be agreed before the original rental period ends. Contact Independent Stairlifts as soon as you know you may need more time so we can check the equipment remains available and confirm the revised end date.

We will explain any changes to the rental charge or terms before the extension is arranged. If the stairlift needs a check, servicing or a battery replacement during the extended period, this can also be discussed. Continue using the equipment only as instructed, and report any damage, unusual movement or charging problem promptly. If you no longer need it, let us know so collection can be arranged without unnecessary delay.
