How long does it take to get a custom stairlift installed once I make a decision?

A custom stairlift can often be installed within a few days of your decision if it is a straight model and the required equipment is available. A curved stairlift usually takes longer because the rail must be measured, designed and manufactured to follow your staircase. Your surveyor will provide the most reliable timescale after assessing the stairs, access arrangements and any bespoke requirements.

The installation timescale normally has four stages:

• Final assessment: A surveyor checks the shape and dimensions of the staircase, the position of doors and landings, available power supplies, parking or access arrangements, and how the stairlift will be used. They will also discuss seating, controls, safety features and any particular mobility needs.
• Track planning and manufacture: A straight rail may be prepared quickly because it follows a standard line. A curved rail requires accurate measurements and careful design around bends, intermediate landings, narrow sections and changes in gradient. It cannot normally be produced accurately from a simple estimate or photograph.
• Pre-installation checks: The installation team confirms that the equipment, rail and accessories are ready and agrees an appointment with you. If the property needs electrical work, clearance or another preparation task, this should be identified before installation.
• Installation and testing: The rail is secured to the staircase or, where appropriate, the surrounding structure. The stairlift is then fitted, charged and tested throughout its full route. The installer explains safe operation, charging, controls and what to do if assistance is needed.

For a straight custom stairlift, the main factors affecting the wait are equipment availability, the surveyor’s findings and the installation team’s schedule. If the stairlift needs a particular seat, swivel arrangement, safety option or transfer aid, those requirements may need to be sourced before the appointment can be confirmed.

Curved stairlifts generally require more planning. The rail may need to pass around one or more corners, stop at several levels or park away from the main staircase. A particularly narrow staircase, unusual landing, tight doorway or limited headroom can add design work. In a multi-storey home, the surveyor will also consider whether one continuous stairlift or separate lifts would provide the safest and most practical solution.

The agreed timescale can also be affected by the property itself. Listed buildings, staircases with unusual construction, restricted access, building work, electrical alterations or the need to coordinate with another trade may require additional checks. These issues do not necessarily prevent installation, but they should be resolved before the final date is set.

When your survey is complete, ask for confirmation of:

• whether the proposed stairlift is straight or curved and made to measure;
• the expected manufacturing or preparation period;
• the planned installation date and how long the work is expected to take;
• any preparation you need to complete before the installer arrives;
• what happens if the survey identifies an unexpected structural or access issue; and
• when the stairlift can be used following installation and handover.

Installation itself is usually completed during a scheduled visit, although the duration depends on the staircase, rail design and any additional equipment. The fitter should test the stairlift at every point on its route and make sure you can use the controls, seat and safety belt confidently before leaving. Keep the charger connected as instructed, and report any change in performance or unusual noise rather than continuing to use a stairlift that may need attention.
