What maintenance should I expect for a stairlift, and how can I ensure its longevity?

Stairlift maintenance consists of routine professional servicing, basic checks between visits and prompt attention to any change in performance. Following the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule, using the lift as intended and replacing consumable parts when required will help keep it safe, reliable and in good working order for longer.

What professional servicing involves

A qualified stairlift engineer will inspect the lift, rail, seat, carriage, controls and safety systems. Depending on the model, servicing may include cleaning and lubricating specified moving parts, checking the charging points, testing the batteries and examining the belts, drive components, sensors and electrical connections. The engineer should also check that the stairlift starts, stops and travels correctly, and that safety features such as the seat swivel, armrests, footrest sensors and obstruction sensors operate as intended.

The appropriate service interval depends on the stairlift model, how frequently it is used, the installation environment and the manufacturer’s instructions. Many domestic stairlifts are serviced periodically rather than after every minor issue, but you should follow the schedule provided for your particular lift. A service may also be advisable after the stairlift has been unused for a long period, moved, exposed to unusual conditions or repaired.

Checks you can carry out safely

• Keep the stairlift rail, steps and landing clear of clothing, bags, furniture and other obstructions.

Everyday use and the installation environment

Use the stairlift only for its intended purpose and within its stated weight limit. Sit centrally, use the seat belt where fitted, keep loose items away from the rail and avoid carrying loads that could catch on the stairs or affect your balance. Do not allow children to play with the controls, and keep pets away from the moving carriage and footrest.

Temperature, moisture and dirt can affect equipment, particularly on outdoor installations. Keep an outdoor stairlift as dry and clean as reasonably possible, use any supplied protective cover correctly and report corrosion, water ingress or deterioration of covers and seals. Indoor lifts should also be protected from spills, excessive dust and unsuitable cleaning products.

Maintenance for reconditioned and bespoke stairlifts

A reconditioned stairlift still requires the same careful use and planned servicing as a new installation. Its expected service life depends on the model, its previous use, the condition of its components and the quality of the reconditioning work. Keep any service records and ask for advice if the lift is showing signs of wear sooner than expected.

Bespoke installations may include a curved rail, hinged or powered track, unusual controls or other features matched to the staircase and user. These components can have their own inspection requirements.
