Are there financing options available for purchasing a used stairlift?

Financing may be available for a used stairlift through a provider’s payment plan or an independent finance arrangement, although approval, deposit requirements, interest and repayment terms vary. Ask for the total amount payable in writing and check whether grants or local authority support could reduce the amount you need to finance.

Financing may be available for a used stairlift through a supplier payment plan, a regulated credit provider or an independent finance arrangement. Availability depends on the supplier, your circumstances and the stairlift selected. Before agreeing, compare the total amount payable—not just the regular instalment—and check the interest, fees, deposit, repayment period and what happens if your circumstances change.

Ask about the payment options available. Independent Stairlifts can explain whether finance is available for the particular reconditioned stairlift and installation package you are considering. Some arrangements are offered directly by a supplier, while others are provided by a separate finance company. These options may have different eligibility checks, documentation, interest rates and terms, so they should not be treated as interchangeable.

A finance application will usually involve an affordability assessment and may include a credit check. Approval is not guaranteed, and the interest rate offered can depend on the lender’s assessment of your circumstances. If the application is made by an older customer, a family member or another person who helps with payment, the lender will normally assess the named applicant rather than simply the person using the stairlift. Make sure everyone understands who is responsible for the agreement.

When comparing arrangements, request the following in writing:

  • the cash price of the used stairlift, including assessment, preparation, delivery and installation;
  • the deposit, if one is required;
  • the regular repayment and the length of the agreement;
  • the interest rate, any representative APR and all additional charges;
  • the total amount payable over the full term;
  • whether early repayment is permitted and whether an early settlement charge applies;
  • what is included in the warranty, servicing or aftercare package; and
  • what happens if an instalment is missed or the agreement is cancelled.

The total amount payable is particularly important with a used stairlift. A lower purchase price does not automatically make an arrangement cheaper if interest and fees are added over a long repayment period. Compare the financed total with the cost of paying outright, and consider whether spreading the cost is worthwhile once installation and any future servicing are included.

Check the condition and warranty alongside the finance terms. Finance does not change the age, specification or remaining service life of the stairlift. Ask which components have been inspected or replaced, whether the batteries are covered, how long the warranty lasts and whether call-outs or labour are included. A used stairlift with limited cover may have a lower initial price but could require additional expenditure later.

Other sources of help may reduce the amount you need to borrow. Depending on your circumstances, it may be worth asking your local authority or occupational therapist about means-tested assistance, community equipment services, home improvement support or other local schemes. Eligibility and availability vary, and some schemes require an assessment or prior approval. Do not assume that a grant will be awarded before committing to a purchase or finance agreement.

VAT treatment can also depend on the customer’s disability or long-term condition, the equipment and the way the sale is arranged. Ask for an itemised quotation and check whether VAT has been applied correctly before signing. The supplier may need a declaration confirming eligibility, but this is separate from any credit application.

For a regulated credit agreement, read the pre-contract information and agreement carefully before signing. Check the lender’s identity, the complaints process and the cancellation or withdrawal rights that apply to that particular arrangement. If payments are secured against an asset or another person is acting as guarantor, make sure the consequences are fully understood. Independent financial advice may be appropriate if the agreement is complex or affordability is uncertain.

Before proceeding, confirm that the finance covers the complete installed solution rather than the lift alone. A curved used stairlift, for example, may require a rail made for a particular staircase, while outdoor installations can involve additional weather-resistant equipment and fitting work. The quotation should state exactly what has been included, so that necessary installation work does not become an unexpected extra.

If affordability is uncertain, discuss the specification and payment options before an assessment is finalised. Do not choose a cheaper stairlift solely because the instalment appears smaller: a suitable, correctly fitted model with clear aftercare may represent better value over its usable life. A written quotation and a full explanation of the finance terms will allow you and any family member helping with the purchase to make a properly informed decision.

Finance for a used stairlift may allow the cost of the lift and installation to be spread over an agreed period, subject to the provider’s terms and an affordability assessment. Before accepting an arrangement, compare the total amount payable with the cash price, including any deposit, interest, fees and installation costs.

Ask for written confirmation of:

  • the regular repayment and agreement length;
  • the total amount payable;
  • any early settlement or missed-payment charges;
  • what the warranty and aftercare include; and
  • whether the finance covers the complete installed solution.

Depending on your circumstances, local authority assistance or other support may reduce the amount you need to borrow. Check eligibility before committing, as funding may require an assessment or prior approval and is not guaranteed.
