How long does installation take for a straight stair lift?

A straight stair lift is usually installed during a single appointment, often within a few hours, provided the staircase is suitable, the electrical supply is ready and the required lift is available. The exact installation time depends on the length and condition of the staircase, the chosen equipment and any preparation needed in the home.

Before fitting begins, the installer checks the staircase, access points and proposed position of the lift. They also confirm where the charging point will be located and whether the existing electrical supply is suitable. A straight stair lift normally follows one continuous flight, so installation is generally more straightforward than fitting a curved model, which may require a bespoke rail and more detailed preparation.

The fitting process commonly includes:

• Protecting the surrounding flooring, walls and furniture where necessary.
• Positioning and securing the rail to the stair treads rather than the wall.
• Installing the seat, footrest, controls, sensors and charging equipment.
• Connecting the lift and checking its movement along the full staircase.

Once fitting is complete, the installer should carry out a full operational and safety check. They will normally demonstrate starting and stopping, using the controls, fastening the seat belt, operating the swivel seat and responding to an obstruction or loss of power. The stair lift should not be treated as ready for use until these checks have been completed and the user understands how to operate it safely.
