Additional costs when renting a Stannah stairlift can arise when a service or requirement falls outside the written rental package. The monthly rental may cover use of the stairlift, servicing and repairs, but charges can still apply for non-standard installation work, damage, early removal, missed payments or changes to the agreement. The exact position depends on the stairlift model, your staircase and the terms provided in your quotation.

Before installation, ask for a clear breakdown of the total cost, including the recurring rental charge and any one-off fees. Check whether the following are included:

• the initial home assessment and quotation;
• delivery of the stairlift;
• standard installation and testing;
• routine servicing and safety checks;
• repairs, call-outs and replacement parts;
• removal of the stairlift when the rental ends; and
• any making-good work, such as filling fixing holes or repairing damaged flooring.

Some rental plans include most of these services, while others charge separately for installation, removal or particular call-outs. A plan that appears to have a lower monthly rental may therefore have higher initial or end-of-term charges.

Non-standard installation work is one of the more common potential extras. A standard stairlift is usually fitted to the staircase rather than fixed directly to the wall, but additional work may be needed if the property has unusual access, restricted power supplies, fragile flooring, obstructions or a staircase layout that requires special preparation. Electrical work, alterations to nearby fixtures, clearing furniture and repairing pre-existing damage may not be included in the rental price.

Curved staircases can also require a bespoke rail and more involved fitting than a standard straight installation. This does not automatically mean that every curved stairlift rental has separate charges, but it is important to confirm which design, installation and removal costs are included in your individual quotation.

Damage or misuse may be chargeable even where normal repairs are included. Rental agreements commonly distinguish between fair wear and tear and damage caused by an accident, inappropriate use, unauthorised alterations or failure to follow the operating instructions. Ask how the agreement deals with damaged upholstery, armrests, controls, batteries or charging equipment, and report faults promptly rather than attempting repairs yourself.

Ending the rental early can also result in a charge. The agreement may contain a minimum rental period, notice requirement, early termination fee or removal charge. A stairlift is assessed and fitted for a particular staircase, so it should not be transferred to a different home without professional confirmation.

Check how repairs are handled before signing. If servicing and breakdown repairs are included, confirm whether there are exclusions, restricted service hours or charges for visits where no fault is found. Also check whether batteries and other consumable parts are covered, particularly if the stairlift is used infrequently or the charging point is not kept available.

Other costs can include late-payment charges, failed-payment administration, replacement keys or remotes, and damage caused by third-party contractors. These are contract-specific rather than automatic charges, so they should be shown in the rental agreement or explained before you proceed.

VAT treatment should also be clarified. Eligibility for VAT relief can depend on the user’s circumstances, the nature of the supply and the supplier’s requirements. Do not assume that a rental stairlift is automatically exempt; ask what information is needed and whether the quoted prices include VAT.

To avoid surprises, request a written quotation that separates the initial payment, recurring rental charge and possible end-of-rental costs. Ask specifically:

• Is installation included, and what would count as non-standard work?
• Are servicing, breakdown repairs, parts and call-outs included?
• Is removal included when the rental ends?
• What happens if the stairlift is damaged or needs to be moved?
• Is there a minimum term, notice period or early termination charge?
• Are there any charges for missed payments, replacement accessories or failed visits?
• Does the quoted price include VAT, and could VAT relief apply?
