What is included in the cost of renting a stairlift?

The cost of renting a stairlift generally covers use of the stairlift for the agreed rental period, professional installation, routine servicing and repairs caused by normal use. Many agreements also include removal when the hire ends, although this is not universal. The written quotation and rental terms should confirm exactly what is included, particularly for curved, outdoor or specially adapted stairlifts.

The stairlift itself

Your rental charge normally covers the stairlift supplied for your staircase, including the seat, controls, charging equipment and safety features. The equipment remains the rental provider’s property, so you pay for its use rather than buying it outright. A straight stairlift is usually installed from standard components, while a curved model is made or configured to follow the shape of the staircase. This difference can affect the rental price and the terms offered.

Assessment and quotation

A suitable rental arrangement should begin with an assessment of the staircase, the user’s mobility needs and the position of the charging points. The assessment helps establish whether a stairlift can be installed safely and whether the proposed model is appropriate. It should also identify practical issues such as narrow landings, doorways, multiple floors, restricted access or the need for an outdoor-rated unit.

Ask whether the assessment and survey are included in the quoted cost or charged separately. Any required adaptations to the staircase, electrical system or surrounding area should be explained before you agree to the rental.

Professional installation

Installation is commonly included in the initial rental cost. Installation does not normally include major building or electrical work. Before installation, make sure the quotation or contract states the initial payment, ongoing rental charge, rental period and payment frequency. It should also set out the installation arrangements, servicing and breakdown cover, response arrangements, insurance responsibilities, damage exclusions and the process for ending or extending the hire.

For a temporary mobility need, a rental can avoid the larger upfront cost of purchasing a stairlift.
