Initial setup charges for a stairlift rental are the one-off costs payable before or at the start of the agreement. They usually cover the home assessment, delivery and installation of the stairlift, while removal at the end of the rental may be included or charged separately. The amount is confirmed after assessing your staircase and depends on the equipment and work required.

Assessment and quotation

A suitability assessment is normally the first part of the setup process. This allows us to check the staircase, landing areas, electrical supply and any access or safety considerations. It also confirms whether a standard straight stairlift is suitable or whether a curved or outdoor model is needed. The assessment may be included in the rental arrangement, but you should check whether any separate survey or call-out charge applies.

Common elements of the initial charge

• Delivery: transporting the stairlift and any required accessories to your home.
• Installation: fitting the stairlift to the staircase, setting the controls and safety features, and testing its operation.
• Additional equipment: items such as a different seat configuration, powered options, a longer rail or outdoor protection may affect the initial cost.
• Preparation work: minor changes may be needed if furniture, flooring or another obstruction prevents safe installation. Any work of this kind should be discussed and agreed before it is carried out.
• Removal arrangements: some agreements include dismantling and collecting the stairlift when the rental ends, whereas others list removal as a separate charge.

For a straight stairlift, installation is generally more straightforward because the rail follows one flight of stairs. A curved stairlift is made to follow the individual shape of the staircase and may involve more detailed surveying, bespoke rail work and additional installation time. Split-level staircases, narrow access areas, unusual landings and external installations can also change the setup requirements.

What may not be included

Initial setup charges do not necessarily include every cost connected with the rental. Depending on the agreement, they may exclude monthly rental payments, optional accessories, remedial electrical work, structural alterations, delivery to difficult-to-access locations or removal at the end of the term. Insurance, servicing and repairs may be dealt with elsewhere in the agreement rather than within the initial payment.

Do not assume that a low initial charge represents the total cost of renting. Compare the setup charge with the monthly fee, the expected rental duration and any end-of-rental costs. An agreement with a higher initial payment could still be more suitable if it includes installation, servicing and removal, while a lower upfront charge may leave some of these items payable separately.

Before installation, confirm the following

• What the initial payment covers, including assessment, delivery and installation.
• Whether VAT applies and whether the quoted price includes it.
• Whether removal, collection and making good any installation points are included when the rental ends.
• Whether accessories, alterations or additional visits could create extra charges.
• When the setup charge is due and whether it is refundable if the installation cannot proceed.
• Which servicing, repairs and safety checks are covered by the ongoing rental agreement.
