How long does installation of a curved stairlift typically take?

A curved stairlift is usually fitted in a single working day once the bespoke rail has been manufactured and delivered. The exact installation time depends on the shape and length of the staircase, the number of floors served, access to the property and whether any electrical or building work is needed. Your installer should confirm the expected fitting time after completing the assessment.

Unlike a straight stairlift, a curved model is made to follow the specific dimensions of your stairs. The rail normally has to be measured, designed and manufactured before installation can be booked. This preparation period is separate from the fitting itself and can take longer if the staircase has unusual bends, tight turns, intermediate landings or several levels.

On the installation day, the engineer will generally:

• Protect the surrounding flooring, walls and furnishings where necessary.
• Position and secure the bespoke rail to the stairs, rather than fixing it to the wall in most installations.
• Fit the stairlift carriage, seat, controls and charging equipment.
• Connect the power supply and complete any required electrical work.
• Test the lift through its full route, including bends, parking positions and safety features.
• Show you how to operate, charge and maintain the stairlift safely.

A straightforward domestic installation may be completed without significant disruption, but a more complex staircase can require additional time. Factors that may extend the fitting include multiple landings, particularly narrow sections, unusual rail design, restricted access for carrying equipment, or the need to alter a socket or electrical supply. If the stairlift is being installed in a shared building or another property with access restrictions, arrangements for parking, entry or working hours may also affect the schedule.

The condition of the stairs is considered during the survey. Loose or damaged treads, unsuitable handrails, poor lighting or obstructions may need attention before the lift can be installed safely. These issues should be identified in advance wherever possible. If additional work is required, the installer should explain what is needed and whether it will be completed before or alongside the stairlift fitting.

At the end of the installation, do not rely solely on the demonstration. Try the controls yourself and ask about charging, the swivel or powered seat functions if fitted, emergency stopping, remote controls and what to do if the lift stops. The engineer should also leave the operating information and explain how to report a fault or arrange servicing.

To help the appointment run smoothly, keep the staircase and landing clear, make sure the engineer can reach the electrical supply, and arrange for someone who will use the stairlift to be present for the handover if possible. Pets and other household members should be kept away from the work area until testing is complete.
