What quality checks are performed on reconditioned stairlifts before installation?
Before installation, each reconditioned stairlift is visually inspected and mechanically and electrically tested, including the rail, seat, controls, batteries, charging system and safety features. It is then test-run to confirm smooth, reliable operation and checked for suitability with your staircase before our engineer installs it.
Before installation, a reconditioned stairlift is inspected, tested and assessed for suitability rather than simply installed as supplied. The checks cover its mechanical components, electrical systems, controls, safety devices, batteries, charging equipment and the condition of the rail. An engineer also confirms that the stairlift is appropriate for your staircase and intended use.
Visual and condition inspection
The stairlift is examined for signs of damage, excessive wear, corrosion, loose fixings or contamination. The seat, armrests, footrest, swivel mechanism, seat belt, covers, controls and casing are checked for secure operation and acceptable condition. The rail and its fixings are also inspected to identify damage, distortion or anything that could affect smooth travel.
Where a component does not meet the required condition, it may be repaired, replaced or excluded from installation. Reconditioning is not limited to cleaning the equipment; the purpose is to confirm that the stairlift is suitable for safe, dependable use.
Mechanical checks
- The drive mechanism is checked for smooth and consistent movement.
- The carriage, rollers, gears and other moving parts are inspected for wear and correct alignment.
- The seat swivel and locking mechanism are tested to ensure the seat remains secure during travel and when the user gets on or off.
- The footrest and any obstruction sensors are checked for secure attachment and correct response.
- Fixings, brackets and connections are examined to ensure the stairlift is properly supported.
The engineer will look for unusual noise, juddering, hesitation or movement that could indicate a mechanical problem. Any required servicing or adjustment is completed before the stairlift is considered ready for installation.
Electrical and battery testing
The electrical system is checked for secure connections, damaged cables and correct operation of the controls. The batteries and charging system are tested because they directly affect whether the stairlift can complete its journey reliably. The engineer checks that the stairlift charges correctly, responds to its controls and operates as expected when connected to its normal power supply.
Battery condition is particularly important on a reconditioned stairlift. Batteries that no longer hold an adequate charge are replaced rather than relied upon. The charging points, power supply and any relevant indicators are also checked for correct operation.
Safety feature checks
Safety devices are tested individually and during a complete operating cycle. Depending on the stairlift model, these can include the seat belt, swivel-seat lock, armrest and footrest sensors, obstruction sensors, travel limit controls, braking system and emergency stop control. The stairlift should stop or respond correctly when a safety device is activated.
Controls are checked for reliable response, including the handset and any controls fitted to the armrest. The engineer also confirms that the stairlift cannot travel in an unsafe configuration, such as when the seat is not correctly positioned or a relevant safety lock has not engaged.
Test run and staircase suitability
After the individual components have been checked, the stairlift is test-run to assess its complete operation. This includes starting and stopping, travelling along the rail, negotiating bends where applicable, arriving at the correct points and returning to the charging position. The engineer listens for abnormal sounds and checks for smooth, controlled movement throughout the journey.
The proposed installation is assessed against the staircase and the user’s requirements. This includes the rail layout, available space at the top and bottom, access to the seat, position of the charging point and any doors, landings or obstructions. For a curved stairlift, the rail configuration and bends must be suitable for the staircase; a straight stairlift is assessed for the length and layout of the straight flight.
Final checks before handover
Once installed, the engineer carries out commissioning checks on the stairlift in its actual position. The fixings, clearances, controls, safety features and charging system are checked again, followed by a complete test journey. The user is shown how to operate the stairlift, use the safety controls, charge it correctly and report a fault.
If an assessment identifies a concern that cannot be resolved safely, the stairlift should not be installed until the issue has been addressed or a more suitable solution has been selected. This inspection and testing process helps ensure that the reconditioned stairlift is compatible with your staircase, operates as intended and is ready for safe everyday use.
Reconditioned stairlifts are quality checked through a combination of visual inspection, mechanical testing, electrical testing and a full test run before installation. This confirms that the stairlift is in suitable condition, operates correctly and is appropriate for your staircase.
Particular attention is given to the batteries and charging system, as these determine whether the stairlift can complete its journey reliably. The engineer checks the controls, charging points, cables and safety devices, while worn batteries or components that do not meet the required condition are repaired or replaced where appropriate.
After installation, the stairlift is tested again in its actual position. The engineer checks the fixings, clearances, travel along the rail, stopping points, seat position, safety controls and charging operation before showing you how to use it safely.
