What types of stairlifts do you purchase?

We purchase a range of used stairlifts, including straight, curved and outdoor models, together with suitable stairlifts that have previously been reconditioned. Each stairlift is considered individually, because its value and reusability depend on its condition, age, specification, safety and whether it can be removed without damage.

Straight stairlifts are commonly suitable for resale when the rail, motor, controls, batteries and seat are in good working order. We can assess stairlifts fitted to a single, uninterrupted flight of stairs, including models with different seat styles, weight capacities, controls and optional features. The condition of the rail and the availability of essential parts are particularly important when determining whether a straight stairlift can be purchased.

Curved stairlifts may also be considered. These are made to follow bends, landings, intermediate floors or more complex stair layouts. Because a curved rail is usually designed for a particular staircase, its potential for reuse depends on its design, dimensions and compatibility with another installation. A curved stairlift may still have value, but the assessment needs to take account of the rail as well as the lift itself.

Outdoor stairlifts can be purchased where they have been properly maintained and remain suitable for outdoor use. We check the effects of exposure to weather, including the condition of the seat, controls, covers, charging equipment, batteries and electrical components. Corrosion, water damage or deterioration of protective materials can affect whether an outdoor model is safe and economical to remove and reuse.

Reconditioned stairlifts may also be eligible, whether they were previously installed as a used stairlift or supplied after refurbishment. Reconditioning does not automatically determine the value of a lift. We still need to establish its current condition, service history where available, age, specification and the condition of its removable and fitted components.

We may consider stairlifts with features such as:

• Swivel, perching or powered seats
• Folding arms, footplates or rails
• Remote controls and call or send controls
• Hinged or sliding rail sections
• Different finishes, upholstery and control arrangements

These features can affect demand and compatibility. A lift with specialist options may be valuable for the right future installation, but some features are specific to the original staircase or user and may limit where the equipment can be reused.

We do not assess a stairlift solely by its type or original purchase price. During the valuation, we consider the manufacturer and model, the condition of the motor and drive system, battery performance, charging equipment, safety mechanisms, rail, seat, controls and other supplied components. We also consider whether replacement parts remain available and whether the stairlift can be removed safely.

The circumstances of the installation are relevant as well. For example, access to the property, the method used to secure the rail, the condition of the stairs and any changes made around the lift can affect removal. You do not normally need to uninstall the stairlift before contacting us; removal requirements and any associated arrangements can be discussed as part of the assessment.

If you are unsure which type you have, provide photographs of the stairlift, rail and staircase together with the make and model details where available. We can then establish whether it is likely to fall within the types we purchase and explain what information is needed for a fuller valuation. A purchase offer is subject to inspection and confirmation that the stairlift is suitable for safe removal and potential reuse.
