What is the process for selling my used stairlift to you?

The process for selling your used stairlift to Independent Stairlifts involves an initial assessment, a valuation, agreement of the offer, and arranged collection. We assess the stairlift itself, its condition and suitability for resale, together with the staircase and access arrangements if it is still installed. If you accept the valuation, we agree the removal and collection arrangements with you.

1. Contact us with details of the stairlift

To begin, provide as much information as possible about the stairlift. Useful details include the make and model, whether it is a straight, curved or outdoor lift, its approximate age, and whether it is currently installed or has already been removed. Photographs of the stairlift, rails, controls and any labels can help us identify the equipment and assess its condition before arranging a visit.

If you are unsure of the make or model, do not delay contacting us. The information may be shown on a label beneath the seat, on the motor unit, or on the charging equipment. We can explain what details are needed and whether an assessment at the property is appropriate.

2. We assess the stairlift and its condition

Our assessment considers the points that affect whether the stairlift can be purchased and reused. These include:

• the make, model and type of stairlift;
• the age and general condition of the equipment;
• whether the lift operates correctly and holds charge;
• the condition of the seat, armrests, footrest, controls, batteries, charger and safety features;
• the condition, length and design of the rail;
• whether parts are available and whether the model remains practical to refurbish; and
• the access needed to remove and transport the stairlift safely.

For a curved stairlift, the rail is usually made for a particular staircase, so its design and potential to be adapted or reused are important. With a straight stairlift, the rail may be more readily suitable for another staircase, but its length and condition still need to be checked. An outdoor stairlift also requires assessment of its exposure to weather and the condition of its protective components.

If the stairlift is installed, we may need to inspect the staircase and surrounding area. This helps us understand how the equipment can be removed without causing avoidable damage and whether there are any access restrictions, narrow entrances or other practical considerations.

3. We provide a valuation

After reviewing the information and completing any necessary assessment, we provide an offer for the used stairlift. The valuation reflects the equipment’s condition, age, model, specification, resale potential, required refurbishment and the practicalities of removal. It is not based solely on the original purchase price, because used stairlifts can require replacement parts, servicing or reconditioning before they are suitable for another installation.

We will explain any relevant points that affect the offer. If the available information changes—for example, if the equipment is found to be materially different from the details provided—we may need to review the valuation before removal. Any change should be discussed with you before proceeding.

4. You decide whether to accept

You are free to consider the offer and ask questions before making a decision. There is no requirement to proceed until you have understood the proposed valuation and the collection arrangements. If you do not accept, the process ends without the sale going ahead.

If you accept, we confirm the details of the stairlift being sold, the agreed offer and the next steps. We may also need to confirm that you have the authority to sell the equipment, particularly where the stairlift was supplied by a local authority, housing provider, care organisation or another third party. Any ownership or funding conditions should be resolved before agreeing the sale.

5. We arrange collection and removal

Once the offer is accepted, we arrange a suitable date for collection. Where the lift is still installed, our team removes it using appropriate care and equipment. You do not normally need to uninstall it yourself unless we have specifically agreed a different arrangement. Attempting to remove an installed stairlift without the right tools or knowledge can create safety risks and may damage the lift, rail, staircase or electrical connections.

Before collection, please clear access to the stairlift and tell us about anything that could affect the work, such as restricted parking, shared entrances, steps outside the property, pets, building access arrangements or a need to use a particular entrance. If the lift has already been removed, keep its main components together and protect them from damp or accidental damage. Please do not dispose of the charger, batteries, remote controls, key or fixing components, as these may be needed for assessment.

The removal appointment is concerned with the stairlift and its associated equipment. It does not automatically include making good decoration, repairing holes, moving unrelated furniture or altering the staircase. If you have concerns about the condition of the wall, stairs or flooring after removal, raise them before the appointment so the scope of work is clear.

6. Completion of the sale

After the stairlift has been collected and the agreed checks have been completed, we complete the sale in line with the arrangements confirmed with you. Any payment details, required documents or collection conditions will be explained as part of the agreement. Keep a record of the accepted offer and contact us promptly if your circumstances or the condition of the stairlift changes before collection.
