What do you do with the stairlifts after purchasing them?

After purchasing a used stairlift, we inspect it to establish its condition, age, model, safety and suitability for future use. Where practical, we service and recondition the stairlift before offering it for reuse. If it is not suitable for another installation, we dismantle it and recover any usable components or recyclable materials, disposing of the remainder responsibly.

The exact outcome depends on the stairlift and its condition when collected. A stairlift that has been well maintained and remains compatible with current safety and technical requirements may have a further useful life. Others may be too old, heavily worn, damaged or unsuitable for safe reinstallation. Buying a stairlift does not automatically mean that it will be resold as a complete unit.

Our assessment normally considers:

• the overall condition of the motor, drive system, seat, armrests, footrest and controls;
• the condition and operation of the rail, brackets, charging points and safety sensors;
• the condition of the batteries and other replaceable components;
• whether the model can be supported with suitable parts and servicing;
• whether the stairlift can be installed safely in another property; and
• whether its design and condition are appropriate for the requirements of a future user.

Following inspection, a suitable stairlift may be cleaned, tested, serviced and reconditioned. This can include replacing worn or failed components, checking the charging system, testing the safety features and confirming that the lift operates correctly. Any work carried out depends on the condition of the individual stairlift and whether it is technically and economically sensible to restore it.

A reconditioned stairlift is then matched to a suitable staircase and user rather than installed without further checks. The rail configuration, staircase layout, user’s mobility needs and available features all need to be considered. A stairlift that worked well in one home may not be suitable for another staircase, even if the model is the same.

Before a reused stairlift is installed, its condition and compatibility should be assessed by a suitably trained installer. Installation should include appropriate safety checks, commissioning and an explanation of how to use the equipment. Any servicing, warranty or aftercare arrangements will depend on the stairlift, the work completed and the terms provided at the time of its subsequent installation.

Some stairlifts cannot be reused safely or reliably. This may be because of extensive damage, corrosion, missing parts, battery failure, obsolete technology or a lack of suitable replacement components. In these cases, the stairlift may be dismantled. Components that remain serviceable may be retained for appropriate repairs, while metals, electrical parts, batteries and other materials are separated and handled through suitable disposal or recycling routes where available.

This approach means that purchasing a used stairlift is not simply a matter of collecting it and putting it straight into another home. Each unit must be assessed on its own merits, and safety takes priority over reuse. If you are selling a stairlift because it is no longer needed, you can leave the assessment, removal and decision about its next use to the purchasing and installation team. The collection arrangements and any charges involved should be confirmed before you accept an offer.
