What types of stairlifts do you purchase?

Independent Stairlifts purchases a range of used stairlifts, including straight, curved, outdoor and reconditioned models. Each stairlift is assessed individually before a valuation is offered, taking account of its make, age, condition, specification, installation history and potential suitability for reuse.

Straight stairlifts are commonly considered because they are designed for staircases with a single, uninterrupted flight. Their suitability for resale depends on the condition of the rail, motor, batteries, controls, seat and safety features. A straight stairlift that was fitted to a standard staircase may be suitable for reuse elsewhere, although the replacement installation will still need to be assessed carefully.

Curved stairlifts may also be purchased. These have rails manufactured to follow the shape of an individual staircase, including bends, intermediate landings and changes in direction. The rail is an important part of the assessment because its resale potential depends on its design, dimensions and whether it can be adapted or matched to another staircase. The stairlift carriage and other components may also be assessed separately where the original rail is not suitable for reuse.

Outdoor stairlifts can be considered where they have been designed for external use, such as access to a garden, driveway or raised entrance. Outdoor models are exposed to moisture, temperature changes and dirt, so particular attention is paid to corrosion, weather protection, battery performance, controls, covers and the condition of the seat and track.

Reconditioned stairlifts may be purchased as well as privately owned or previously installed models. A stairlift that has already been refurbished is not automatically accepted or rejected. Its condition, service history, remaining working life, specification and the quality of any previous repairs will all be considered. Components must be safe, functional and suitable for potential reinstallation.

We can also assess stairlifts with different seat styles and optional features, such as swivel seats, powered footrests, hinged rails, folding seats or additional controls. These features can affect the potential value, but they do not guarantee that a stairlift will be purchased. The condition and compatibility of the complete system remain central to the assessment.

Custom-fitted stairlifts are not necessarily excluded. A curved stairlift is usually made for a particular staircase, so its rail may have limited value if it cannot be reused. However, the carriage and other parts may still have potential, depending on their condition and specification. A straight stairlift can also have non-standard features, such as a hinge or shortened rail, which will be reviewed when the details are provided.

We consider stairlifts from a variety of manufacturers, subject to condition, availability of suitable parts and the possibility of safe reuse. The brand alone does not determine whether we can purchase a stairlift. Providing the model information, photographs, proof of servicing where available and details of any faults will help us make a more accurate initial assessment.

Before confirming a purchase, we may need to check:

• the stairlift type and whether it is intended for indoor or outdoor use;
• the manufacturer, model and approximate installation date;
• the condition of the rail, motor, seat, batteries, charger and controls;
• whether the stairlift is currently working and still installed;
• any repairs, modifications or replacement parts;
• the staircase layout and measurements, particularly for a curved model; and
• whether collection and removal can be completed safely.

An older stairlift may still be considered if it is in good condition and has reusable components, while a relatively recent stairlift may not be suitable if it has significant damage, missing parts or an unsupported specification. Age is therefore considered alongside condition and reuse potential rather than used as the only deciding factor.
