Is there a specific age or condition limit for stairlifts you buy?

There is no fixed age or condition limit for stairlifts that Independent Stairlifts may buy. Each used stairlift is assessed individually, based on its safety, working condition, age, model, maintenance history, availability of replacement parts and whether it can be removed without causing damage. A stairlift does not need to be nearly new, but it must have realistic potential to be safely collected, refurbished and used again.

Age is only one part of the assessment. An older stairlift may still be considered if it has been well maintained, operates reliably and remains supportable with suitable parts. Conversely, a relatively new stairlift may not be suitable for purchase if it has been damaged, poorly maintained or has a fault that makes removal or refurbishment impractical.

The main factors considered include:

• Overall working condition: The lift should run smoothly, stop correctly and respond properly to its controls and safety features. Unusual noises, intermittent operation, jerky movement or repeated fault messages should be reported.
• Battery and charging performance: Batteries are consumable components and may need replacement, particularly if the stairlift has been unused for a long period. Their condition helps indicate the work likely to be needed before resale.
• Rail, drive system and mechanical components: The track, motor, carriage, gears and safety mechanisms need to be inspected for excessive wear, damage or corrosion.
• Electrical components and controls: The charger, remote controls, arm controls, wiring and switches should be present and in a condition that can be tested safely.
• Availability of parts and technical support: Some older or discontinued models can be difficult to refurbish if essential parts are no longer available. This can affect whether the stairlift has resale value.
• Completeness: A stairlift is easier to assess when the key items supplied with it are available, including the charger, remotes, user information and any original keys or accessories.
• Removal and refitting potential: The stairlift must be capable of being removed safely and, where appropriate, adapted or refitted for another suitable staircase.

Cosmetic wear does not automatically prevent a purchase. Scratches, faded upholstery or general signs of use may be acceptable where the stairlift is mechanically sound. However, significant corrosion, cracked components, water damage, evidence of impact or damage to the rail and carriage may make it unsuitable. Outdoor stairlifts are assessed particularly carefully because exposure to weather can affect electrical and mechanical parts.

A stairlift that has been installed on a curved or unusually shaped staircase can still be considered, but its value and reuse potential depend on the rail design. A bespoke curved rail is normally made for the original staircase, so it may have limited application elsewhere. The condition of the rail, the possibility of adapting it and the availability of compatible parts will be important. Straight stairlifts are often simpler to assess for reuse, although the rail length, fittings and overall condition still need to be checked.

Previous customisation does not necessarily rule out a stairlift. Features such as a powered swivel seat, hinged rail, upgraded controls or specific seat options may be useful to another buyer. The assessment will consider whether the custom components are working, compatible with the rest of the system and suitable for safe reuse.

We may also need information about the stairlift’s history. Useful details include the make and model, approximate installation date, whether it has been regularly serviced, the reason it is being removed and whether it has been working recently. Photographs of the stairlift, rail, carriage, batteries, controls and any visible damage can help with an initial assessment, although a final decision may require further checks.

If the stairlift is currently faulty, do not attempt to dismantle or repair it before contacting us. A fault does not always mean it has no value, but unsafe removal, missing components or unauthorised modifications can make assessment more difficult. Leave the equipment in place where possible and explain the fault clearly.

Safety is the deciding consideration. We will not treat a stairlift as suitable simply because it powers on or moves along the rail. Its safety features, structural condition and suitability for responsible refurbishment must be considered before an offer can be confirmed. If it cannot be collected or reused safely, it may not be accepted even where some individual parts appear serviceable.
