How does the collection process work when I sell my used stairlift?

The collection process involves confirming the stairlift’s suitability, arranging a convenient appointment, and having a trained installer dismantle and remove the equipment safely. Before collection, we will usually review the stairlift, staircase and access to the property so that the arrangements are clear and the removal can be completed with as little disruption as possible.

Once you have provided details of the stairlift, we may ask for information such as its make, model, approximate age, condition and whether it is a straight, curved or outdoor installation. Photographs can also help us understand the lift, rail, charging points and surrounding staircase. This initial assessment helps establish whether the stairlift is suitable for collection and whether any particular access or removal requirements need to be considered.

After the assessment, we will agree the collection arrangements with you. This includes the proposed date, access instructions and any terms relating to the sale. If the stairlift is still in use, it should remain available for the agreed removal appointment unless we have advised otherwise. Please tell us in advance about restricted parking, narrow entrances, unusual access, pets or any other factor that could affect the visit.

On the day, the installer will inspect the installation before starting work. The stairlift will normally be isolated from its power supply and prepared for dismantling. The seat, carriage, controls, batteries and other removable components are taken apart as required. A curved stairlift rail is usually removed in sections because it has been made to follow the original staircase. Its customised shape does not normally prevent collection, although it may affect whether the equipment can be reused elsewhere.

Removal is carried out with care around the staircase, walls, flooring and nearby furniture. The team will use suitable handling methods for the equipment and will avoid leaving loose components or exposed wiring behind. Any fixings or brackets that need to be removed will be dealt with as part of the agreed work. The exact extent of making good, such as filling old fixing holes or redecorating, should be confirmed before collection, as this is not automatically the same as stairlift removal.

Where possible, the stairlift and associated parts will be checked against the details already provided before they leave the property. If there are accessories, manuals, chargers, keys, remote controls or service records that form part of the sale, keep them together and make them available to the installer. These items can help with identification, assessment and future use.

Collection may take longer or require additional planning if the stairlift is damaged, has been modified, is fixed unusually securely, or is located in a difficult-to-access property. A stairlift installed on a narrow or multi-flight staircase may also need to be dismantled in a particular order. If the condition differs substantially from the information supplied during the assessment, the installer may need to discuss the position with you before proceeding.

Before the appointment, remove personal belongings from the stairs and landing where practical, clear a route to the entrance, and ensure that someone authorised to approve the removal is present if required. Do not attempt to dismantle the stairlift yourself. Its batteries, electrical connections and fixings can create safety risks, and amateur removal may damage equipment or the property.

Once the equipment has been removed, the collection is completed in line with the agreed sale and payment arrangements. If you have any concerns about the condition of the staircase, missing components or the work carried out, raise them with the installer at the time so they can be recorded and addressed promptly.
