How does the removal process work when selling my stairlift to Independent Stairlifts?

Once the sale has been agreed, Independent Stairlifts arranges a convenient removal appointment and sends an experienced installer to disconnect and remove the stairlift safely. The installer protects the surrounding area, removes the equipment and fittings in a controlled way, and clears the items from your home as agreed.

The removal process usually follows these steps:

• Appointment confirmation: The removal date, access arrangements and any practical details are confirmed with you in advance. Please mention anything that could affect access, such as narrow entrances, parking restrictions or other mobility equipment in the hallway.
• Pre-removal checks: The installer checks the stairlift, its position and the route through which the components will be taken out. This is particularly important for curved or bespoke lifts, where the rail may have been made to follow the exact shape of the staircase.
• Safe isolation: The stairlift is switched off and disconnected from its electrical supply in accordance with safe working procedures. Batteries and other components are handled carefully, especially where the lift is old, damaged or no longer working.
• Protection of your home: Care is taken around the staircase, walls, flooring and nearby furniture while the lift is dismantled. Larger parts are removed in manageable sections rather than being forced through doorways or tight spaces.
• Dismantling and removal: The seat, carriage, rail, charging equipment and associated fittings are removed as applicable to the model. The installer also checks for remaining brackets, cables and fixings so that nothing unnecessary is left behind.
• Final check and clearance: The area is checked after removal and the equipment is taken away or dealt with according to the arrangements made when the sale was agreed.

A stairlift is normally removed using the same care as an installation. The installer should not need to alter the structure of the staircase. However, removing a lift can expose fixing holes, small marks or slight differences in colour where the rail or brackets have been in place. These are part of the existing installation and are not usually included as building, decorating or plastering repairs unless this has been specifically agreed beforehand.

You can help the appointment run smoothly by clearing personal belongings from the stairs and the access route, securing pets and ensuring that the installer can reach the stairlift’s charging point and any relevant controls. Do not attempt to disconnect or dismantle the lift yourself. This could create an electrical or mechanical hazard and may damage components that need to be assessed or reused.

If the stairlift is not functioning, tell us before the visit. A non-working lift may need to be moved manually or dismantled in a different way, and the installer may need to take extra precautions. Likewise, report any known faults, damage, unusual noises, loose fittings or previous alterations before removal.

For a curved stairlift, some parts may be unique to the original staircase and may need more careful separation and labelling. For a straight, outdoor or reconditioned stairlift, the removal method depends on the model, its condition and the way it has been installed. In every case, the agreed valuation and sale arrangements should be checked before work begins, including what equipment is included and how payment or collection is handled.
