A reconditioned Stannah outdoor stairlift needs regular cleaning, protection from the weather, checks of the charging points and safety features, and professional servicing in line with the manufacturer’s guidance. Reconditioning does not remove the need for routine care: an outdoor lift is exposed to rain, damp, dirt, temperature changes and, in coastal areas, salt in the air.

After installation, follow the service and care instructions provided for your particular lift. The exact requirements can vary according to the model, its age, the condition of the rail and carriage, how often it is used, and whether it is installed in a particularly exposed position.

• Keep the lift clean: Wipe the seat, arms, footrest, controls and accessible surfaces with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Remove leaves, mud, grit and other debris from the rail, steps and landing areas. Use only cleaning products recommended for the relevant surfaces, and do not pour water over the lift.
• Protect it from rain and moisture: Use the supplied outdoor cover when the stairlift is not in use, where appropriate. Make sure the cover is fitted correctly and that the lift is dry enough before covering it. Do not trap moisture beneath the cover, as prolonged damp can contribute to corrosion and affect electrical components.
• Check the charging points: Keep the charging contacts and the area around them clean and free from leaves, grit and other obstructions. Park the lift at its designated charging position when it is not being used, so the batteries can recharge. If the lift does not appear to charge, avoid repeatedly operating it and contact a qualified stairlift engineer.
• Inspect visible parts: Look for loose covers, damaged wiring, corrosion, cracks, unusual wear or anything that has become obstructed. Check that the seat, arms, footrest and swivel mechanism operate normally, without forcing them.
• Keep the route clear: Outdoor steps and landings should be kept free from ice, standing water, moss, loose gravel, fallen leaves and other trip or obstruction hazards. The stairlift’s sensors may stop it if an object is detected, but removing the obstruction is safer than trying to override the system.

Before each use, check that the seat is secure, the safety belt fastens correctly, the arms and footrest are in their normal position, and the controls respond as expected. These signs should be reported promptly rather than left until the next planned service.

In freezing conditions, do not operate the lift if ice has formed on the rail or steps; clear the route safely first.
