Refurbished chair lifts should undergo documented mechanical, electrical, safety and operational checks before they are offered for installation. The assessment should confirm that the lift is in suitable condition, that its safety devices operate correctly, and that it can be installed and used safely on the intended staircase.

Identification and condition checks

The technician first identifies the chair lift and reviews its available service or refurbishment history. The unit is inspected for signs of damage, corrosion, excessive wear, missing parts or unsuitable previous repairs. Components that do not meet the required condition are repaired or replaced rather than simply cleaned and returned to service. The inspection should cover the chair, carriage, track, charging equipment and accessories.

Mechanical inspection

Mechanical parts are checked for secure fixings, smooth movement and excessive play. This normally includes the drive system, rollers, gears, linkages, swivel mechanism, armrests, footrest and seat assembly. The track is examined for damage, alignment and secure mounting points. Any unusual noise, juddering or resistance during movement is investigated before the lift is approved.

Where the chair lift has a folding or powered footrest, swivel seat or powered controls, each function is tested through its full range of movement. The technician also checks that moving parts cannot create an avoidable trapping or shearing risk during normal use.

Electrical and battery checks

Electrical wiring, connectors, switches, charging points and control circuits are inspected for damage, loose connections or signs of overheating. The batteries are assessed for condition and charging performance, and replaced if they cannot provide dependable operation. The charger is checked to ensure that it connects correctly and that the chair lift returns to charge at its designated charging points.

The refurbished chair lift is run repeatedly on a suitable test staircase or during the installation assessment. Testing checks starting and stopping, travel speed, changes in direction where applicable, charging positions, noise, vibration and smoothness. The technician observes the lift under normal operating conditions and checks that it remains stable throughout the route.

Once installed, the lift is tested again on the customer’s staircase. This confirms that the track follows the staircase correctly, that the chair clears steps, walls and landings, and that the lift stops in the intended positions. The installer also checks access at the top and bottom of the stairs, including whether the seat can be swivelled and whether the user can get on and off safely.

Suitability and installation checks

A chair lift can be mechanically sound but unsuitable for a particular home. The assessment therefore considers the staircase layout, available space, landing arrangements, power supply, user’s mobility and weight requirements, and the safest way to approach and leave the seat. The installer should explain any limitations, such as restricted access, unusual parking positions or the need to keep part of the staircase clear.

The installation itself should use appropriate brackets, fixings and electrical connections for the property. After fitting, the installer carries out a final safety and function check, makes sure the track and equipment are secure, and explains essential operation, charging, emergency procedures and maintenance to the user or their carer.

Records and customer checks

A responsible supplier should be able to explain what has been inspected, what has been replaced or repaired, and what testing was completed. Ask for confirmation of the warranty, servicing arrangements, emergency support and any conditions affecting safe use. You should also receive operating guidance and be shown how to use the controls, safety belt, swivel seat and manual or emergency procedures relevant to the model.

Quality checks do not make a refurbished chair lift maintenance-free. Regular servicing, keeping the track clear, charging the batteries correctly and reporting changes in noise, movement or braking performance are important for continued reliability.
