Straight models are usually the simplest to match, while curved and outdoor installations require a more detailed assessment to confirm that the refurbished equipment can be adapted safely and economically.

Customisation does not usually mean altering the stairlift itself in a way that changes its safety design. It more commonly involves selecting compatible components, configuring the rail to suit the staircase and adapting the installation to the access available in your home. A survey is therefore essential before a particular refurbished chair lift can be recommended.

During an assessment, the installer will consider:

• the staircase shape, including straight flights, bends, curves, intermediate landings and changes in direction;
• the width of the stairs and the space needed for safe passage alongside the lift;
• the position of doors, radiators, windows, handrails and other obstructions;
• the available space at the top and bottom for entering and leaving the seat;

Outdoor staircases can also be considered, but the equipment must be specifically designed for external use. Outdoor models require suitable protection against weather, corrosion and temperature changes, together with appropriate charging and storage arrangements. An indoor refurbished chair lift should not be installed outside simply because its rail appears suitable. The installer must check the condition of the staircase and the exposure of the proposed equipment before confirming that an outdoor installation is safe.

There are practical limits to customisation. The drive unit, rail system, batteries and safety mechanisms must remain compatible and in good condition. A refurbished lift should not be modified in a way that compromises its testing, manufacturer-approved operation or protective features. For this reason, the assessment should identify which parts can be reused, which may need replacing and whether a different model would provide a better fit.

A refurbished option can be particularly suitable where your staircase is straight or where compatible components are available for a more complex layout. It may be less suitable where the staircase has unusual curves, very restricted access, multiple landings or a requirement for extensive changes. In these situations, the correct comparison is not simply between refurbished and new equipment, but between the complete installation options, including the rail, seat, controls, fitting work, testing and warranty.

Before installation, ask for confirmation that:

• the proposed chair lift is suitable for the exact staircase rather than only a similar layout;
• any refurbished components have been inspected, serviced and safety tested;
• the seat, controls and transfer arrangements meet the user’s needs;
• the installation will leave suitable access for other people using the stairs;
• any electrical or structural work required has been identified; and
• the warranty covers the equipment and the installation on the agreed terms.

Following installation, the stairlift should be checked to ensure that it travels smoothly, charges correctly, stops at the intended points and operates its safety features. The installer should also explain the controls, charging routine and actions to take if the lift displays a fault.
