A reconditioned stairlift is usually fitted in a few hours once the correct lift has been selected and the installation appointment has been arranged. A straight stairlift is generally the quickest to install because it uses a standard rail and a straightforward staircase layout. A curved stairlift, or a lift for a staircase with landings, bends or unusual access requirements, can take longer to prepare and fit.

The installation time is separate from the earlier assessment and scheduling process. Before fitting, the staircase and surrounding space need to be checked so that the available reconditioned stairlift is suitable for the user, the stairs and the way the home is used. This may involve confirming the stair configuration, the position of electrical sockets, the location of the lift when parked and any access requirements for bringing equipment into the property.

The main stages are usually:

• Assessment and specification: A surveyor reviews the staircase, discusses the user’s mobility needs and identifies a suitable stairlift configuration.
• Preparation of the reconditioned lift: The unit is selected, checked and prepared for the agreed installation. For a curved stairlift, the rail must match the staircase, so availability and compatibility can affect the appointment date.

Outdoor stairlifts may also require extra consideration because the installer must account for exposure to weather and the condition of the external steps or access route.
