Reconditioned curved stairlifts can be suitable for outdoor use, but only when the stairlift was designed for external installation and has been professionally inspected, refurbished and weatherproofed. A standard indoor curved stairlift should not be installed outside, even if it appears to be in good condition, because exposure to rain, moisture, frost, sunlight and temperature changes can affect its electrical and mechanical components.

Outdoor suitability depends on both the stairlift and the staircase. The lift must be compatible with the external environment, while the route needs to provide a safe, practical installation position. During an assessment, we consider the shape and length of the stairs, the landing areas, the position of the parking point, drainage, nearby doors or gates, and whether the user can get on and off the stairlift safely in all relevant weather conditions.

A reconditioned outdoor curved stairlift should have its principal components checked before installation. This normally includes the motor and drive system, batteries, charging equipment, controls, sensors, seat, armrests, footrest and rail. The condition of covers, seals and exposed fixings is particularly important outdoors. Any signs of corrosion, water ingress, cracking or deterioration should be investigated and rectified before the lift is considered suitable.

Weather protection is also essential. Depending on the installation, the stairlift may need a suitable cover when parked, protection for its charging point and controls, and positioning that limits direct exposure to heavy rain and strong sunlight. A cover must not interfere with the lift’s operation or charging, and water must be able to drain away rather than collect around the rail, motor or electrical connections. An outdoor lift still requires sensible care during severe weather; it should not be treated as completely unaffected by the elements.

The power supply must be planned by a suitably qualified installer. Outdoor electrical connections need appropriate protection from moisture and accidental damage, and the charging position must be accessible without creating a trip hazard.
